Is it the “Law of Attraction,” or is there such a thing as the “Law of Noticing?”

Have you ever wondered if the Law of Attraction, or “Ask and you shall receive,” is real?

I have many times in my life had experiences that would point to that there is truth worth exploring more.

Last month, my wife and I spent a few weeks touring northern Vancouver Island.

It always amazes me how much this island has to offer. From wilderness camping, ocean kayaking, whale and bear watching, good eateries and some delicious craft beer!

That’s not what I would like to share with you today.

Aside from the beautiful things we got to see and do, we also experienced what I would call those miracles in life where you feel that you are somehow connected to something that can’t be explained. Even though many will attempt to, I hope that by the end of this post, I don’t fall into that trap. So we shall see.

We own an RV that is a little on the tall side. It tends to rub against those lower hanging branches when we take off into the woods using the forest roads. Several times, I could hear the knocking and scrapping as those branches tried to navigate the obstacle course that lay across my roof.

Sure enough, we managed to knock something off. The small, round cap that covered the septic holding tank vent. It’s not a big thing, but if it rained, I didn’t want it to fill up the holding tank with rainwater when it was designed to carry more than just that. Without the vent, it also threw a slight order into the area where someone would flush. It was not ideal, and since we had several more days to camp and out in the nowhere, a quick fix was needed.

That afternoon, we were going to explore the ocean beach. Ocean beaches are great for washing up many items, mostly garbage and plastics, but who knows. It might even bring us a vent cap.

I told my wife we needed to manifest a cap while walking on the beach. I reminded her about the pail we found in the middle of nowhere while kayaking in a remote lake when we wanted to wash the dust off the boats. So we knew these things do happen to us.

After several hours of watching the surf, looking for whales and scrounging through debris, we found nothing. I thought for sure with the recent storms, something that would be suitable would show up. Oh well.

The next day, with nothing on my mind, Willow (my Snoodle) and I went for our morning walk about. It’s not for my peace of mind or exercise, although I get it. It was more for her and getting her morning business taken care of.

I let her lead the way as she sniffed for the perfect place to make the first deposit of the day. About 30 minutes in and up over a dirt road, down a ditch, and along a slightly overgrown trail, she found this small clearing to make her landing. I patiently waited as she took her stance with her back to me, as if embarrassed by my presence and did her thing while I looked around at the surroundings.

No sooner did I start to scout around the ground than I came across a shiny, round, cup-like object on the ground, half covered in dirt.

Could this be?

Besides the dirt stains and the dents from being knocked around, it looked like it would work as a vent cap. It was the cup from one a large Stanley therms. Given its location, it was probably left behind by a hiker or hunter. I imagine how disappointed he might have felt discovering it gone and how different I felt when I found it!

It fit perfectly, but it needed some small side vent holes.

I asked my brother-in-law if he had any drill bits in his junk drawer, and he said he didn’t. Well, we needed to manifest one, then.

The next day, we biked around a remote area away from our camp. We came across several places that looked like potential hot spots for something I could fabricate into a drill. A nail would even be lovely.

Nothing, and after a short time, I said I needed to forget about it and enjoy the bike ride. Which was memorable and included surviving a 13% 2.5 km decline with a right-hand turn at the bottom, with my wife in tow behind my bike, with me yelling at her that I had no brakes! Another story…

Two days later, my brother-in-law came running up to my RV with a large roll of DUC tape.

“You will not guess what I have in my hand?”

Not to state the obvious, I quickly replied, “What?”

Sporting a big grin, he slowly turns the tape over, and what do my little eyes see? Yup, a 1/4-inch drill bit! Of course, he says he has no idea why it’s in his camper.

The job was completed, and here is what I took away from this experience.

Ask, and you shall receive, but you must also be prepared to receive it. Part of that preparedness is to be open and without expectations.

I think it has to be a real need or desire. Not just a nice to have. It is like saying I want a million dollars, but for what? Is there really a need for you to have a million dollars?

In my case, there was a real need for a vent cap.

It appears to me the more you “want” something, the further away it gets. The more you are on the hunt for it, the more it hides and goes unnoticed. Be prepared to forget you asked and go about your business because, from that point, it’s not up to you. Then again, it’s not not up to you either.

Be prepared to accept what is offered. Most times, it’s better than what you expected. Other times, I wish I was more specific in the request, but 100% of the time, it is precisely what is needed.

Being prepared also means being patient. These things don’t happen in mine or your concept of time. They happen when they happen – period.

When you do get it, use it. What message are you giving out when you get something and decide not to use it? Have you ever given something to someone and had them put it in the closet or storage, never having to wear or use it? How did that make you feel?

There is something about being grateful at the moment and demonstrating that gratefulness.

Lastly, be present in the now as much as you can. Being in the hunt is not being present. Thinking about how you might have been more careful or wondering if you will be able to fix the vent or find something is not present or how careless you are or how the world sucks is not helpful, and you are not present to what is happening in front of you. To be present, you have to be out of your mind.

“That’s my story, and I am sticking to it.”

Here is the finished vent repair. (At least it will do for now.)

Hope you were able to get something from the story, even if it was a smile.

The world is filled with things we don’t understand, and I love playing in that field.

Please, have yourself a wonder-filled day!

Hugs and love,

Rick

Do you have a story where things magically appear or circumstances aligned just for you? Please share. I would love to hear them; I am sure others do, too.
